The Colonies - Leonis

In the Colonial Fleet, new officers and enlisted (a.k.a. 'nuggets') are taught the "Lesson of Leonis", which is two-fold. Leonis teaches that over-enthusiastic pride can destroy. It is also a testament to the power of the colonial arsenal, and what happens when war goes too far.

When the Twelve Colonies were first settled, the followers of Leo fought tooth and nail to claim one of the three moons of the gas giant Zeus. The colonists knew that the planet contained uranium, which was a necessary component of nuclear energy reactors and, nuclear weaponry. The colonists believed that controlling the primary source of uranium would grant them a place of great standing within the new colonies.

The Leonids were instrumental in founding the colonial military and advancing its weaponry. They constructed massive space stations, with the intention of becoming a transit hub for the entire system.

Sadly, the uranium ore was depletead by several centuries of mining. Though the Leonids fought to retain their place of standing and power within the colonies, their attitude and arrogance led to several civil wars which resulted essentially in Caprica, along with the other two colonized moons of Zeus - Picon and Scorpia - blasting Leonis back to the stone age.

After this, Leonis was considered subservient to Picon and politically, it was a non-entity.
